The Symphonic Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio is one of the most important orchestras not only in Bulgaria but also in the Balkans. With its concerts activity in the country, its various international tours and mainly its recording activity, the orchestra has been taken as a model for the high artistic and professional skills.
The orchestra’s members come from the most prestigious Musical and Conservatory Academies such as the Moscow Academy, The Academy of Saint Petersburg, the Julliard School, the State Music Academy. The orchestra’s repertory is extremely rich and various and includes difficult and rarely played lyrics.
One of the main activities of the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra is the recording for either the National Radio Library or the realization of various musical projects such as films’ soundtracks.
A special credit for professional and artistic growth of the Bulgarian National Radio Symphonic Orchestra is due to its long lasting conductor Vassil Stefanov (1913-1991) who directed the orchestra for more than 30 years.
In 2001, the Orchestra has received from the Ministry of Culture, the Bulgarian musical and dance operator’s League and the Radio FM Classic, the prestigious prize “Crystal Lira” for its high achievements in musical art and dance.
Milen Nachev directed the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra until 2002
During the season 2003-2004 the orchestra was guided by one of the most expert and talented conductors, Rossen Milanov.
From 2008 to 2015 the permanent conductor have been the famous Bulgarian composer and conductor Emil Tabakov. The Orchestra has been recognized as the best one in the country under his guidance.
Starting 2016 the Chief conductor is Rossen Gergov
Rossen Gergov is a Laureate of the first Evgeny Svetlanov International Conducting Competition (held by the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg) in May 2007. His recording of works by David Chesky with the Symphony Orchestra of the Norrlandsoperan was nominated for a Grammy in 2008 and he has also recorded for the BBC, the Bayerische Rundfunk and ORF in Austria.
Sud Ovest Records together, have an exclusivity contract with the National Radio Symphony Orchestra since July 2013.
